Last night, a large contingent of Nichols Fire department members, wives and significant others attended the 5th Annual Nichls Fire Department Awards and Recognition Dinner. As in the past, the evening started off with a reception and then moved the main meal which held in the fireplace room. Immediately following dinner, Past Chief Robert Zitnay and Deputy Chief Plofkin presented a short video which contained numerous photos from events, calls, drills and other department events held over the past year. At its conclusion, master of ceremonies and event coordinator Lt. Gary Pugliese began the presentation portion of the evening.
Assistant Chief Kingsbury and Lieutenant McEnaney presented members who recently recieved thier Firefighter 1 certifications.
Past Chief Zitnay and Chief Engineer Allan recognized and presented awards to members who recently completed the 2Q driving course and State Motor Pump Operator class.
The Nichols Board of Fire Commissioners and Nichols Fire Department members presented Past Commissioner Wayne Szmyt with a plaque for his achievements and 21 years of service to the department.
Our next presentation was one that was heartfelt and well deserved. This was given to recently retired Trumbull Center Fire Chief Wayne Schalich, who stepped down after 18 years as Chief. Gratifying words were exchanged by Chief Rice and Chief Schalich as they each took turns at the podium.
The evening then moved on to the fire department awards for 2009 which were as follows:
Top Responder: Firefighter Rob Silva
Top Drill Attendee: Firefighter Matt Perkowski
Member of the Year: Past Chief Robert Zitnay
Chief's Award: Lt. Gary Pugliese
The evening was a huge success and we would like to thank Lieutenant Pugliese for organizing this event.
